I am Dracula. I bid you welcome. Listen to them, the children of the night, what music they make. With these haunting lines spoken by Bela Lugosi, you know you are watching a genuine classic. That's right , the spotlight is shining brightly on this section of my site. This is my favorite film of all time, the 1931 version of Dracula. Imagine if you can a horror movie billed as a love story and released on Valentines Day. A movie that has no musical score except at the opening credits and is a ballet theme "Swan Lake". A movie in which the star doesn't speak english and learned his lines phonically and didn't understand the words. An actor so convincing that everyone thinks he wore fangs in the movie but never did . If you can't imagine such a movie, you don't have to, this movie has been done, it is DRACULA.
The immortal Bela Lugosi shines as the bloodthirsty Count Dracula. With Lugosi's aristocratric accent he establishes himself as the one and only Count Dracula. Yet he is a character that deserves sympathy. Like when he spoke to Lucy in the theatre, he said "To die- to be really dead. That must be glorious." He was trapped in a situation he could not control. And lest we not forget the stalwart Dr. Van Helsing. Played masterfully as always by the never to be forgotten Edward Van Sloan. Another interesting cast member is the niece of Universal founder Carl Laemmle, Carla Laemmle. She had the priviledge of speaking the first line in the first all sound horror movie. She did a fine job of playing the role of a timid type of girl. We also can never forget the unforgettable Renfield , played by Dwight Frye. A fine character actor who always gave 100% to make his characters believable.
