" I can't help getting a sense of evil in all this"   Neither can I.  This is an unusual entry in the Universal Horror Clasic series. Imagine an ancient gas which can be duplicated in a lab and whoever is exposed is turned into the living dead! The only cure is a temporary one and it involves a cardiaectomy (performed by the ghoul)  and mixing substance from the heart with some ancient herbs. If you think this is a good plot then this is the movie for you!  George Zucco is perfect as the mad scientist Dr. Miller. David Bruce isn't eally the leading man type but did okay. Robert Armstrong (Carl Denham from the original King Kong) has a brief stint as a reporter that throws himself into his work and pays the price. The always lovely Evelyn Ankers turns in a great performance as always. Turhan Bey from the Lon Chaney Mummy series is a little stiff acting. Not believable in a crisis to act like nothing is going on. Look for Milburn Stone (Doc from Gunsmoke) as the detective in charge of the case.
